The topic Pop!_OS’s COSMIC just got a frosted glass desktop style, and it looks amazing is currently the subject of lively discussion — readers and analysts are keeping a close eye on developments.
This is taking place in a dynamic environment: companies’ decisions and competitors’ reactions can quickly change the picture.

When people discuss which Linux operating system they prefer, they rightfully focus on the distro itself. It’s the beating heart of the system, so it’s naturally what people gravitate toward first when recommending a system. However, the desktop environment is also a huge part of it; if the distro is the core, then the desktop environment is what people use to interact with it, and a bad environment can put people off.
If you’ve ever tried out Pop!_OS, you’ll have also seen its COSMIC desktop environment. They’re both made by system 76, so they’re often developed in tandem to benefit one another. Now, COSMIC is getting a new “frosted glass” desktop theme, and it’s making me wonder if sticking with Plasma is the best idea.
The news broke on system76’s CEO, Carl Richell’s, X feed, where he showed off the new frosted style. From a cursory glance, it brings me back to the look and feel that Windows Vista had back in the day. Say whatever you want about Vista’s performance or how it was managed, but I adore how it looked, and I love how this COSMIC theme looks too.
If you’re on Pop!_OS 24.04, you can grab the update right now on the COSMIC store. Once you’ve got it, just log out and back in again, and it should appear in your desktop’s settings, ready to roll. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I just found a new excuse to give Pop!_OS a try…
