The topic Don’t Starve Together just hit its highest player count ever, a decade after… is currently the subject of lively discussion — readers and analysts are keeping a close eye on developments.
This is taking place in a dynamic environment: companies’ decisions and competitors’ reactions can quickly change the picture.

Usually, games never breach the player counts they attained at launch. Updates and DLCs can bump the number up again, but usually, the people who have already shown interest in the game have bought it. We rarely see a game exceed the player count it got at launch, and it’s even rarer for games that released a decade ago.
Such is the case with Don’t Starve Together, which brought a multiplayer element to the hit survival title Don’t Starve back in April 2016. Now, the game has set a new record player count ten years after its release date, because it turns out that selling a game for under $2 does wonders for popularity. Who knew?
As reported by PC Gamer, Don’t Starve Together has just hit the highest number of players we’ve ever seen. At the time of writing, if you head over to the SteamDB page for the title, the website lists the new record at 122,662 players, a fair chunk of players higher than its previous 115,925 count. In fact, weirdly enough, Don’t Starve Together seems to be going in reverse, starting off with a niche player base count and slowly growing over the years.
So why is everyone suddenly hopping on a 10-year-old game? Well, the developer of the title, Klei Entertainment, is celebrating its 20th birthday with a huge Steam sale. Part of that sale knocks 90% off the price for Don’t Starve Together, bringing it all the way down to a meager $1.49.
And you don’t just get the game, either; you also score an extra copy you can send to a friend. Put two and two together, and it’s easy to see how Don’t Starve Together has scored another record with people picking up the game for cheap and dragging their friends along for the ride.
You can register your interest right now, but you’ll still need to wait.
