Chromecast with Google TV launched in 2020 as a solid intro to the new experience \u2013 that aged decently well \u2013 but Google took a long time to deliver an upgraded version. The Google TV Streamer is a major upgrade, fixing the storage and performance woes that long plagued the Chromecast, but it was never a direct replacement simply because, from a hardware perspective, it fulfilled a totally different need.<\/p>\n

So, despite happily swapping out the other Chromecasts in my home with Google\u2019s newer devices, one of the TVs in my home was stuck on that older hardware. Google TV Streamer\u2019s bigger size was far from ideal behind a mounted TV in my office that, underneath, didn\u2019t have room for a streaming box \u2013 nor did I want to deal with the associated cable management. I tried Onn 4K Plus in this spot last year, as well as some older Walmart streaming boxes, but the need of a full HDMI cable made the whole thing feel pretty clunky.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, I was glad to hear Walmart was making a 4K streaming stick, something Google TV customers have oddly been starved of for a while now.<\/p>\n

The \u201cOnn 4K Streaming Device,\u201d as Walmart refers to it, is a tiny little streaming stick that reminds me most of a Roku stick. On one end, an HDMI plug (with a short extender in the box if it\u2019s not a perfect fit on your TV) and, on the other, USB-C. A power adapter is included in the box and, within about a minute, I was up and running. It fit behind my TV exactly where the Chromecast did with no added fuss. I did use the HDMI extender, but it\u2019s so short \u2013 and more importantly stiff \u2013 that it didn\u2019t feel as clunky and messy as alterative devices.<\/p>\n

Beyond that, this is a pretty standard Google TV experience. Setup utilizes the new flow that launched last year, and performance is solid. It\u2019s a whole lot faster than my Chromecast was, despite only having 2GB of RAM and 8GB of storage, just like that older device offered. I\u2019d be perturbed about those specs if this were my home\u2019s main streamer, but for me, this is just a secondary device used in my office for the occasional YouTube video, livestream, etc. That\u2019s where this hardware really feels like a perfect fit \u2013 in a secondary room. You can jump up to Onn 4K Pro or Google TV Streamer for the main living room but, even then, Walmart\u2019s new streaming stick feels up to the task. I\u2019ll be curious to see how it holds up over time.<\/p>\n

The included remote is also very familiar, using the same one Walmart has included with its devices for years now \u2013 still based on one of Google\u2019s reference designs.<\/p>\n

The Walmart Onn 4K streaming stick is available now for $39.88 for most customers \u2013 the launch is still ongoing, so your result may vary by region. But if you\u2019ve been on the hunt for a proper Chromecast with Google TV replacement, this is the best I\u2019ve tried \u2013 at least in the States.<\/p>\n
