The biggest differentiator between mini PCs now is expansion space, and one of the things that’s bit me hard in the past is ignoring PCIe lane count\u2014the lifeblood of a mini PC’s ability to expand.<\/p>\n

CPU horsepower is great, but the moment you add a second NVMe drive to your mini PC, you’ll wish you paid more attention to the PCIe lane count. Most mini PCs in the enthusiast tier advertise two M.2 slots, and most enthusiasts assume that means two equivalent slots, and that’s very rarely the case.<\/p>\n

On a depressing number of mid-range boxes, the second M.2 slot runs at PCIe 3.0 x2, sometimes x1, and occasionally it’s wired through the chipset in a way that shares bandwidth with the first slot. Populate that second slot, and your primary drive will drop from a full x4 link, to x2. For desktop use, that’s not significant, but for home lab use where you could be running ZFS mirrors or Proxmox VMs that lean heavier on storage, the effect is noticeable.<\/p>\n

Beyond just storage, though, as soon as you start adding more PCIe devices, lane count can matter for the performance of other devices.<\/p>\n

Say you’ve populated both M.2 slots, and now you want to attach an external GPU for Jellyfin transcoding and the occasional local LLM workload through Oculink. On paper that’s a clean upgrade, but in practice, you may find that using an external GPU reallocates lanes away from one of your M.2 slots, dropping your secondary storage to a slower link or even disabling it outright. Some platforms handle this gracefully through BIOS-level lane configuration, but others just degrade performance without saying anything at all.<\/p>\n

The same scenario plays out when you’re installing virtually anything else that uses PCIe lanes. If you’ve used your second M.2 slot to add a 10GbE NIC, that slot is no longer available for storage, or if you’ve used it for an HBA to run a few SATA drives in a home lab NAS configuration, the same applies. Every adapter you add is a lane allocation decision that closes off another upgrade path. On a desktop with a full ATX board and 20-plus usable lanes, this is rarely a real constraint, but with a mini PC, it’s one of the main concerns. It’s possible that you could be left with as little as eight usable lanes after the platform has spent lanes on onboard NICs, USB controllers, and chipset uplink. has taken its share. That’s really not enough for meaningful expansion.<\/p>\n

The floor on mini PC CPUs has risen so dramatically that the differences between tiers matter less than they used to, but it’s still not something to ignore completely. They’re also soldered components, which means you’re not able to upgrade them in future. What you see is what you get, so if horsepower is your main concern, it could be worth sacrificing some expansion.<\/p>\n

Lanes also go hand-in-hand with processor selection to a degree, but the CPU generation matters more than which one in the product stack you choose. The Intel N100, N150, and N305 chips for example, expose just nine PCIe 3.0 lanes, while the newer Ultra Mobile chips give you around 20 lanes.<\/p>\n

Lane amount doesn’t always track with generation, though. The AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS or 8945HS, for instance, has 20 potential lanes, but the newer Strix Halo has 16 while having much more raw compute.<\/p>\n

It’s tempting to treat a mini PC purchase the way you’d treat any other PC purchase: pick the chip you want, find a box that fits the budget, and call it done. Realistically, you could treat it that way, but ignoring PCIe lanes seriously ties your hands in terms of expansion. The CPU, RAM, and integrated I\/O dictate what the system can do right now, but PCIe expansion dictates what it can do in future.<\/p>\n
