When I set up my home network, I splashed cash on a nice router that promised great range for a home of my size, but that couldn’t have been further from the truth. Even with range extenders, my house had big dead-zones and I constantly had to plan around what areas had coverage. Eventually, I caved, and I implemented a proper mesh network, which I should’ve had in the first place.<\/p>\n

The difference was night and day. Suddenly, all areas of my home had great signal and speed, not to mention having everything under one SSID eliminated any confusion from visiting family members or friends. If you’re on the fence about whether you need a mesh network, you probably need one.<\/p>\n

Mesh networks are a great way to enhance connectivity, but how many nodes is too many?<\/p>\n

You’d think that after living in a place with constant thunderstorms and occasionally losing electronics to power surges that I’d learn, and purchase a UPS for my equipment once I had the funds for one. Nope. Even after moving away from a place with volatile weather, I was foolish to skip on a UPS for as long as I did.<\/p>\n

My home did experience a power surge, and while most of my equipment ended up being fine, it did kill a couple of things that weren’t connected to a proper surge protector, and some data was rendered unrecoverable on my home server. A UPS would’ve prevented the data loss and if all my mission-critical equipment had been plugged into it, I wouldn’t have lost anything whatsoever.<\/p>\n

A UPS may not seem very appealing at first glance, but it’s a highly useful device for home lab enthusiasts<\/p>\n

Having a gigabit Internet connection is awesome. It’s truly one of the best quality-of-life improvements I’ve made to my home network, but getting gigabit speeds on my main desktop wasn’t an issue with its integrated NIC. The rest of my network didn’t have the proper equipment to transfer at those kinds of speeds, so as I continued to add a switch here, an old server there, speeds across my local network were way slower than they had business being. Replacing cables (including the painful task of replacing the wall jacks) and old equipment allowed me to have 1-2.5 Gbps connections everywhere.<\/p>\n

Whether you’re a home lab enthusiast or a casual media server owner, you may already be familiar with the outdated speeds of 1GbE connections. Most HDDs can choke a 1 Gigabit connection, and that’s before you consider complex RAID configs and blazing-fast SSDs. Likewise, if you stream games or movies over your local server, switching to a 2.5GbE (or ideally, 5Gbe) connection will provide a more responsive experience. I really hope 2025 becomes the year when motherboard, mini-PC, and SBC manufacturers finally move away from the 1 Gigabit standard.<\/p>\n

This may be a regret that most of you don’t carry, but when I purchased a shiny new Wi-Fi 7 mesh network pack, I paid a heavy premium for doing so. At that time, I didn’t mind at all. I thought I was going to make heavy use of that 6 GHz band and enjoy those blazing fast wireless speeds. One thing I completely failed to take into account was the fact that only my iPhone 16 Pro was capable of actually reaching those speeds. The rest of the hardware in my house couldn’t keep up, and as a result, I probably could’ve saved quite a bit of money by waiting or going with a Wi-Fi 6 setup.<\/p>\n

Probably my biggest regret of my home networking journey was waiting until the very end to consider cable management. Now, sure, nobody is going to take the time to string up the cables all nice and tidy without taking the time to see if everything is properly functioning. It’s like closing the side panels on your newly-built PC and screwing them on without having booted the thing yet. Not only do you not want that bad juju, but especially for things like home networking, it’s just bad practice.<\/p>\n

Instead of actually following through with cable management though, I let the problem slide, and as I kept adding more devices that required a hardwired connection, it went from a manageable job to one that was going to take hours. Once you’ve built a rat’s nest of cables, it’s almost impossible to properly manage it without unplugging things. This causes downtime and even further headaches. Don’t do what I did, just plan your cable runs and clean them up as soon as you’ve got everything functional, so when you add devices later it’s not a hair-pulling experience.<\/p>\n

Setting up a home network can be a complicated and arduous process, and making mistakes when purchasing or deploying equipment can be frustrating, but like with any part of tech, it’s a crucial part of the learning process. In the end, as long as you have a reliable network that’s relatively easy to maintain and performs to your needs, that’s what matters.<\/p>\n
