The most recent example is Belkin\u2019s Wemo series, specifically the gizmos that rely solely on the company\u2019s cloud. The same thing happened to Google Nest Secure back in the day, which is why you\u2019d want to prioritize devices that support manual control instead of opting for gizmos from big-name firms. Even leaving aside the privacy problems of the cloud or the fact that losing access to the Internet is all it takes for your smart home setup to become unresponsive, devices that rely on centralized servers for simple operations aren\u2019t ideal \u2013 no matter how popular their manufacturer may be.<\/p>\n

But with the RAM apocalypse over-inflating the Raspberry Pi prices, you\u2019d end up wasting over a hundred bucks on a device that, despite consuming low energy, is compatible with fewer apps and can lose performance when you dive into community add-ons and HACS integrations. You\u2019ve also got the low durability of microSD cards to contend with, as Home Assistant constantly writes data on the storage drive. So, you\u2019d have to spend even more money on an SSD or look into workarounds to avoid bricking the SD card on your tiny tinkering companion.<\/p>\n

Instead, I\u2019d suggest going with a budget-friendly N100 mini-PC as your starter Home Assistant node. Sure, it might cost a few extra dollars than its SBC rival and siphon slightly more energy, but even the cheapest N100 system can handle dozens of devices and automations without breaking a sweat \u2013 all while letting you self-host just as many extra applications (or add-ons, as they were called back in the day). Most mini-PCs also ship with SSDs built into them, and the Home Assistant installation process is a lot easier on x86 boards than it used to be a few years ago.<\/p>\n

Considering all the quality of life tweaks in present-day Home Assistant instances, I\u2019d recommend looking into this smart home control platform even if you\u2019re a complete novice. Sure, you may feel a bit confused in your first few hours with HASS. But if you stick with it, Home Assistant will provide more robust automations and dashboards than anything manufacturers can come up with on their first-party tools. All you have to do is research the smart devices for local polling before buying them, and have a little patience with Home Assistant during your early days.<\/p>\n
