I’ve always been a relatively slow learner when it comes to mathematics, and for the longest time, I couldn’t quite understand why. Part of the problem now seems to be the medium. Textbooks and online course materials often rely heavily on two-dimensional representations to explain three-dimensional concepts (which are often awkwardly labeled), and trying to extrapolate depth and rotation from static diagrams always felt distracting from the problem itself. As you can probably guess, this made 3D geometry a particularly haunting subject. Even looking through the solutions didn’t really help much at all.<\/p>\n

Interactive visuals were nothing short of a godsend when it comes to solving these problems and understanding the solution. I tested the Sonnet 4.6 model with a basic 3D geometry problem where I had to calculate the space diagonal of a cuboid. The model took about a minute and generated an interactive figure that color-coded the triangle, and it immediately occurred to me how the problem required two sequential applications of the Pythagoras theorem, simply by looking at the figure and hovering my mouse over it.<\/p>\n

I have probably spent more time than anyone trying to make sense of diagrammatic representations of logic gates and tallying them through truth tables. Most textbooks will present them as binary abstractions and leave the manual tracing of 1s and 0s entirely to you. It helps, but it also undeniably creates a bit of cognitive load in the process.<\/p>\n

When I asked Claude to generate and explain the functioning of AND, NOT and OR gates, I didn’t feel that cognitive load. The model generated well-labeled gates with simple toggle switches that instantly changed the state of the circuit. Wires would light up, the states would change, and I no longer had to tally the behavior of each gate against a table to see what the outcome would be.<\/p>\n

It occurred to me that even the best of online resources don’t do this, and instead fall back on the same, rather uninspired PDFs. While it’s true that there are certain dedicated circuit simulators that exist for this exact purpose, it’s also true that the friction of context-switching to another application is often too high and doesn’t occur to most users. How often does one actually go searching for specialized software when these tools are natively accessible within the LLMs we already use for almost everything else?<\/p>\n

Another one of the issues I usually have with textbook learning is how the schematic diagrams designed to represent motion stay still, while the reader has to mentally simulate numerous aspects such as the direction of motion, its frequency, and how the entire system comes together. This, for me, is particularly distracting from the core principle that I’m trying to understand, and nowhere is this phenomenon more apparent than in topics like kinematics. I’m usually left to make sense of a formula and a flat illustration of circles and gears, and as a result, it takes much longer for conceptual clarity to arrive.<\/p>\n

Out of sheer curiosity, I decided to feed one of these diagrams into Claude, and was pleasantly surprised to see that it was able to generate an interactive model that simulated gear ratios from the static image. Being able to tweak, tune and observe the system in motion afforded me a working understanding of the concept that would’ve easily taken almost an hour of scrolling through YouTube videos.<\/p>\n

If I were asked a few years ago how LLMs could fit into learning, I’d have probably limited the prospect to ChatGPT explaining concepts like “I were five” or perhaps Grok churning out last minute essays. Claude’s interactive visuals, however, feel like a genuine leap forward in how things are explained and understood.<\/p>\n

There is one small caveat though. On the free tier, the visuals are quite expensive, and I could only manage a couple before hitting the limit. This can potentially deter more casual users.<\/p>\n
