The problem perhaps first announced itself during a casual gaming session on Forza Horizon 6. Now, anyone who has played the game will know that it’s fluidic to a fault, and the driving is immersive enough to transport you onto the streets of Japan. That’s exactly why even a few milliseconds of frame-time spikes are enough to shatter the immersion. That is where I first realized something may be up with the CPU before I could prove it.<\/p>\n

I went through the usual drill that every PC gamer knows by muscle memory. The first port of all was to disable non-essential Windows background processes. Next up was capping the frame rate just below my monitor’s 240Hz refresh to see if it would alleviate the burden on the CPU. I even delved into the system BIOS to check if my RAM’s EXPO profiles were configured in order, which caused me a full restart (talk about inconvenience). Then, I ran the game for another thirty minutes, and for a while, it seemed like the problem was solved. The next moment I drove through a tunnel, and the stutter returned like it had been waiting for me at the end of it.<\/p>\n

I logged a thirty-minute HWiNFO64 session at one-second intervals, and the stutter obligingly showed up around the fifteen or perhaps the twenty-minute mark of driving. When it was done and recorded, I exported the CSV, and handed the raw file to Claude Fable 5 with nothing but the hardware specs and the symptoms. Then, I just let it do its thing for the next five minutes. Over the course of the five minutes, it wrote its analysis code and parsed about 1,700 rows across 145 sensor columns. At this point, I felt pretty confident that I’d arrive at the root cause of the problem.<\/p>\n

The diagnosis revealed something that I certainly wouldn’t have been able to catch myself, and much less find a solution for on community forums. It appeared that HWiNFO’s PROCHOT and HTC throttle flags read “No” for every single sample. By AMD’s definition, this CPU never throttled at all. What Claude instead found was the fact that the chip was running thermally maxed out, jumping from 55\u00b0C at idle to a sustained 76\u201380\u00b0C plateau. This is usual behavior for a Zen 4 CPU. However, at the 10.5 second mark, the temperature spiked from 78\u00b0C to 90.4\u00b0C in an interval of 5 seconds, and the effective clock crashed from 4,200MHz to 740MHz. The model explained that it was AMD’s Precision Boost yanking the clocks to protect the chip, and that’s invisible to every throttle flag. So, after ruling out the power limits and VRM temperatures, Claude prescribed going to the Curve Optimizer to apply a mild negative offset between -10 to -15.<\/p>\n

Following the directions, I went into the BIOS again to set a -15 Curve Optimizer offset, rebooted, and prepared myself to log a fresh session under load. What I first noticed was the fact that the peak temperature dropped from 90.4\u00b0C to 66\u00b0C, which looked a little absurd. I fed the log back to Claude, and the model didn’t seem quite convinced either. Package power never approached the stock’s peak, the current draw was about a third lower, and at matched CPU usage, the “faster” run was actually posting lower effective clocks than stock, which was unusual for an undervolt. It was evident that my CPU test hadn’t been reapplied cleanly on the re-run.<\/p>\n

So I decided to give it a third run to confirm what was happening, this time using Maxon Cinebench 2026 Multiple Threads test, over half an hour, with the test hammering all six cores at 100% usage this time. This time, the peak temperature landed at 74.9\u00b0C, down from 90.4\u00b0C, which is more in line with undervolted behavior. Package power peaked at 94.5W against the stock’s 122W, and as a result, the thermal limit fell from 93.7% to 80%.<\/p>\n

In the subsequent runs that I ran, the stutters were completely absent. The reason for this occurrence is the mere fact that the issue was thermal throttling. Curve Optimizer trades voltage, and not clock speed, and voltage is what actually generates the said heat. Less voltage at the same performance means less heat, which means the CPU never gets close to its TJmax to reduce the clocks.<\/p>\n

I dropped my Ryzen temps by about 15\u00b0C with zero spend \u2014 just smart tweaks.<\/p>\n

Fable 5’s most notable achievement here was not the fact that it recommended a Curve Optimizer offset. Certainly, any enthusiast who has ever experimented with the voltage-frequency curves would be well-versed with its advantages already. It was the fact that every throttle flag in HWiNFO read “No” for the entire session, which meant every conventional diagnosis, mine included, would have gone through the log and walked right past the problem. That is something that caught me off-guard, and it’s every bit as impressive as it sounds.<\/p>\n
