The ROG Crosshair 2006 is a modern nod to the first ROG Crosshair, an AM2-socket board from the era when dual-core Athlon 64s ruled the gaming world. That board boasted eight power delivery circuits, and while the new one has 24, it also pays plenty of homage to the original’s design.<\/p>\n

Under that retro styling, it’s pretty close to the Crosshair X870E Dark Hero, which is about as flagship and modern as the AM5 platform gets. And that’s the thing. Every CPU that the Crosshair line has hosted over the years is dead. Every RAM standard, dead. AGP, IDE, most of the SATA ports \u2014 dead, dead, mostly dead. The motherboard and its name have outlived all of that, because the board was an ideal, not a piece of hardware.<\/p>\n

The Asus ROG Crosshair 2006 celebrates 20 years of Republic of Gamers-branded motherboards, with design choices that echo the copper and colors of the first ROG-branded motherboard.<\/p>\n

On paper, the ROG Crosshair 2006’s power delivery is almost comical. Asus lists a 20+2+2-stage design, with the 20-core stages rated at 110A each, ProCool II connectors, MicroFine alloy chokes, and 10K-rated black metallic capacitors, all sitting under heatsinks that could double as boat anchors. My Ryzen 9 9850X3D doesn’t need all of that power, and neither does yours.<\/p>\n

But ignore that for a second. That lengthy list of overclocking pedigree isn’t really about that; it’s a longevity recipe. The 10K capacitor rating isn’t about speed; it’s about lifespan (the rated hours at temperature before they drift out of spec). The two-ounce copper power planes and eight-layer PCB aren’t for winning benchmarks; they’re to spread heat to reduce the thermal load on other components.<\/p>\n

Those are things missing from budget boards, and we all know that sustained heat over years kills electronics. The over-specced parts on a flagship board are there to keep you idling in an efficient range, where budget boards with lower-rated components live near the red line all day, every day.<\/p>\n

Flagship motherboards are where new features arrive first, and the Crosshair 2006 is no exception. The one thing I wish I could test is the AIO Q-Connector, a line of pogo pins next to the CPU socket that supply power and signals to compatible AIO coolers, so you don’t have to fight the usual rat’s nest of cables. Sure, it might only be Asus coolers right now, but imagine if that became a standard across the industry.<\/p>\n

The push-on Wi-Fi antenna connectors are another thing I appreciate, as are the clip-down NVMe M.2 mounts (I hate the tiny screws most use). Three internal USB headers provide ample peripheral connectivity, while there are two USB4 and nine USB 10 Gbps ports on the rear I\/O (three USB-C, six USB-A). AIOs and PSUs want a USB header these days, and I had to run an external USB cable to one of mine because the midtier MSI Carbon I’m using only has two internal headers.<\/p>\n

And the OLED display might be gimmicky, but it also shows BIOS upgrade progress or hardware monitoring numbers. That’s always handy, even if you don’t necessarily need it.<\/p>\n

Sure, the hardware components matter. But your motherboard can also die from abandonment. The AMD AM5 platform might have longevity, but will every budget motherboard created in that time? We’ve already seen with AM4 that some new BIOS features and CPU support mean dropping some BIOS features because the memory chip the BIOS is stored on has limited capacity.<\/p>\n

Flagship lines get patched for years, partly due to the engineering budget but also because the brand’s reputation lives in its halo products. Bargain boards are where firmware updates go quiet first. That doesn’t matter as much on Intel, where you get two generations of CPU before a new platform. But for AMD users, the AM5 motherboard you buy now could conceivably be the home of your next CPU, and maybe even the one after that. A premium motherboard with long-term BIOS support doesn’t just benefit your first CPU; it saves you a full rebuild down the line.<\/p>\n

Let’s be clear about what the Crosshair 2006 is: an ode to an era of computing that’s gone. It’s a collector’s item, adding a nostalgia tax on top of the usual ROG one. The copper heatsinks are copper-color-coated aluminum, the OLED is like those kiosk screens they have in museums in front of exhibits, and neither of those has anything to do with engineering.<\/p>\n

That doesn’t mean this isn’t a good motherboard, because it is. Overspecced power delivery, capacitors with a lifespan rating worth bragging about, firmware that gets attention for years. These are the things you want to look for, and you can find those in the $250 to $350 tier. And that’s the advice here: use the mindset of someone who would buy this motherboard. Don’t treat the motherboard as a shock absorber for the rest of the budget; put it third behind the CPU and GPU. Maybe even before the CPU, as long as you’re buying a platform with an upgrade path.<\/p>\n

Intel can’t make up its mind about their motherboards, and consumers keep paying the price<\/p>\n

I expected this motherboard to be more show than tell, with all of its retro callbacks turning it into a collector’s edition rather than a daily driver. I was partly right, but then I thought about it some more. Intel gives you two CPU generations (if you’re lucky), but AMD’s AM5 has already done three, and AM4 lasted for five. And in your build, only the motherboard and RAM have a real shot at outliving the other components, making the motherboard the deciding factor in when your platform stops being upgradeable.<\/p>\n

Paying the premium tax early is the cheapest expensive habit in PC building. Think about it this way, if you have to replace a budget motherboard during AM5’s lifespan, that takes your total cost to more than if you’d bought a premium motherboard to start with. You don’t need a copper-colored anniversary model to get there, but if that OLED display speaks to you, I get it. All you need is to treat the motherboard with more respect and a little more of your budget.<\/p>\n
