Bending the pins on a CPU, denting the fins on an AIO radiator, or cracking a motherboard’s PCB are unfortunate outcomes that most PC builders are wary of. What’s less commonly known is that the cables you use with your power supply aren’t interchangeable with those of another unit, even if they look identical. Reusing old cables with a new PSU just because you don’t want to disconnect everything is a silly excuse that can cost you hundreds of dollars in fried components. The voltage supplied to your sensitive components can change dramatically if your old PSU cables don’t match your new PSU’s cables, electrically and physically. Given the limited standardization across PSU models, it’s simply safer to use the cables that come bundled with your new PSU.

Cheap or outdated cables might be ruining your PC’s safety and performance

The biggest problem with different PSU cables is that they look shockingly identical. The 24-pin or 8-pin cables of your old PSU probably look like they’ll fit right in with your brand-new PSU. If you’re upgrading to a new, power-hungry graphics card that needs a larger PSU, you may consider removing the cables only at the PSU end. Sliding in the new PSU and connecting the old cables to it might save you time and effort, but it might be the worst (and last) mistake you make on that build.

While the component ends of 24-pin, 8-pin, and 6-pin cables might be standardized, the pinouts on the PSU ends are hardly so. Different manufacturers and OEMs will almost always have different pinouts. They could vary in terms of the location of the power and ground pins, for instance. Even different product lines from the same brand aren’t guaranteed to have the same pinouts, as evident from Corsair’s Type 3 and Type 4 modular cables not being compatible with its Type 5 power supplies. In fact, the brand states on its website that the 24-pin cable pinout also differs between Type 3 and Type 4 cables. This is just one example, but you should assume that no two PSUs have the same pinouts. If you managed to use old cables with a new PSU in the past without any issues, that was plain luck more than anything else.

Hence, connecting your old PSU cables to your new one can supply incorrect voltage to your motherboard, graphics card, CPU, and even SATA drives. In the worst cases, you can damage your expensive components permanently. Even the PSU itself isn’t immune to incorrect cables, since a short circuit can cause a fire, which is a safety risk for more than just the PSU.

If I had known better, I wouldn’t have touched them with a ten-foot pole

It’s not like there haven’t been efforts to bring proper standardization to PSUs and cables. Intel’s ATX12VO standard is the most well-known attempt at eliminating PSU cable confusion by removing all the voltage rails from the power supply except the 12V one. This rail will supply power to the motherboard, and the subsequent conversion to 5V and 3.3V, as needed, will be done by the motherboard. The latest version 3 of this standard further reduces the motherboard connector to an 8-pin layout, down from the 10-pin cable in version 2. This standard aims to bring down power consumption and connector size, and improve the PSU-system communication.

The ATX12VO standard has been common in server setups for years, but consumer adoption has been minimal. A select number of retail motherboards and PSUs exist, but the standard has not made any progress in the consumer market. Since you need new motherboard layouts to accommodate the ATX12VO power supplies, existing systems can’t just swap PSUs to make use of the new standard. Until the industry adopts standardized layouts for PSUs that get rid of multiple cables, the onus to protect your system from blowing up rests squarely on your shoulders.

We shouldn’t have to worry that high-end hardware will burn itself up.

The fact that you don’t need to reuse old cables with a new PSU is reason enough not to do it. Why risk the safety of your PC when you get all the necessary cables with your new power supply? Trying to save your old cables from going to waste or saving half an hour of effort in replacing cables will seem pretty dumb when you fry your CPU, GPU, or motherboard. Even if you buy an identical PSU model with a higher wattage, I wouldn’t deem the older cables safe to use. Manufacturers are known to change pinouts with no intimation. Since they are free to introduce whatever proprietary standard on the PSU end, old cables should be a strict no-no, irrespective of the model of your new PSU.

The prevalence of modular PSUs makes it easier to commit this blunder of mixing PSU cables. When non-modular PSUs were common, replacing an older PSU meant the cables went out with it. It was a foolproof setup, which has been upended by modular PSUs, so to speak. However, the cable management benefits of modular PSUs are enough for consumers to be more responsible regarding the cables they use.

The MSI MAG A850GL is one of the latest ATX 3.0 power supplies with 850W of 80+ Gold power efficiency, perfect for future-proofing your gaming PC.

Nvidia’s 12VHPWR woes still exist, making everyone think why not use 8-pin cables like before?

The best way to avoid any mishap when upgrading your PSU is to discard your old PSU cables altogether. Keeping them open as an option threatens the safety of your components, the PSU itself, and even your house. It might be possible, in some cases, to reuse certain cables with a new PSU, but the risk is not worth it. Besides, there’s no benefit in reusing cables anyway, so adhering to the “new PSU, new cables” is a no-brainer.

Why it matters

News like this often changes audience expectations and competitors’ plans.

When one player makes a move, others usually react — it is worth reading the event in context.

What to look out for next

The full picture will become clear in time, but the headline already shows the dynamics of the industry.

Further statements and user reactions will add to the story.

The topic This mistake during a PC upgrade can fry your components, and it’s surprisingly… is … This mistake during a PC upgrade can fry your components, and it's surprisingly…Read more

[1
1122,1670,230,2982,1487
post-22387","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-innovate","tag-cables","tag-motherboard","tag-power","tag-psus","tag-standard
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.8 -
