Beta version 229 of Phone by Google today contains strings that point to this. Magic Cue in the Phone app is codenamed \u201cbeacon.\u201d That functionality is now being referred to as \u201cProactive Assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gemini is explicitly referenced, with Magic Cue not doing that today even though it\u2019s powered by Gemini Nano. Magic Cue has even maintained its own icon since launch.<\/p>\n

Zooming out, this is not the first time we\u2019ve heard of \u201cProactive Assistance.\u201d There was a reference in the Gemini app back in April, and this week\u2019s beta Google app release has updated strings:<\/p>\n

The April reference specifically said that the \u201cdata you allow for Proactive Assistance is processed entirely in a private, encrypted space on your device,\u201d which sounds like Magic Cue and Gemini Nano today.<\/p>\n

The launch of the Pixel 11 would be the time for such a rebrand for the year-old Magic Cue. It\u2019s not a big change in the grand scheme, especially with functionality staying the same, but does point to Google coalescing its assistive features on the Gemini brand rather than having Pixel pursue its own path.<\/p>\n

More broadly, this makes sense with the Gemini Intelligence initiative.<\/p>\n
