Next up on my list of fixes was the router. First up, I couldn’t move it closer to the PC because it sat right next to my work setup, which is where I needed it. I even checked internet speeds at different times of day to see if there was an ISP-related issue or if background tasks suddenly hogged all the bandwidth. As surprising as it may sound, it was neither of those. The internet speeds were consistently above 250 Mbps, more than enough for most streaming platforms, and other devices weren’t reporting any such drops in speed, at least none that were noticeable.<\/p>\n

Quality of Service, or QoS, is a feature on modern routers that allows you to prioritize (or deprioritize) devices, tasks, or apps when sharing available bandwidth. In the absence of the feature, your router treats all devices the same. This means a large daily or weekly backup that isn’t critical has the same priority level as a competitive gaming session or a smart TV streaming your favorite show in 4K. While the backup wouldn’t necessarily suffer if it were moved down the priority list, the other two cases would surely benefit if they were bumped up. And that’s where QoS comes into the picture.<\/p>\n

As for enabling and configuring QoS, it’s simple, provided your router supports the feature. You can check that by visiting the router’s admin panel, which is usually accessible at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. In here, you should find a dedicated QoS (Quality of Service) section under the “Advanced” settings. Some manufacturers use different names for the feature, but it almost always has the word “QoS.” Similarly, the way you configure QoS also varies from router to router. On my TP-Link router, I can assign “High Priority” to individual devices and set a schedule if required. Of course, this fixed buffering on my smart TV when I set it to “High Priority,” but few manufacturers offer deeper configurations.<\/p>\n

For instance, on ASUS routers, you can prioritize traffic and bandwidth allocation by app or activity type. This allows you to prioritize gaming and streaming over web surfing or file transfers. If your router offers those levels of customization, make sure to explore them.<\/p>\n

But before you save any changes, keep in mind that enabling QoS won’t magically increase the internet speeds beyond what you are paying for. It will just prioritize your smart TV (or any other device you select) over ones that are placed lower on the list. It also does not mean that other devices will witness a noticeable drop in internet speed. In most cases, you won’t even realize the difference, unless, of course, it’s gaming where latency is a critical factor.<\/p>\n

All that said, it’s also important to understand that QoS can sometimes introduce problems we never really expect. And most of the time, this stems from choosing a pre-set QoS mode within the router settings. Besides, if QoS is misconfigured or if far too many devices have been assigned a high priority, you could be back to square one.<\/p>\n

The idea isn’t just to enable QoS, but also to ensure it’s configured to benefit the affected device. In my case, it was the smart TV, but it could be a different one for you. You might set up schedules (if the feature is available) that prioritize individual devices at different times of day. The key is to find the right balance.<\/p>\n

Apart from that, if you already have a fast-enough internet connection, say anywhere between 300-500 Mbps, QoS may not deliver the results you are looking for. That’s because internet speed isn’t really the bottleneck, but there’s something else responsible for your smart TV’s buffering.<\/p>\n

When I was experiencing buffering on my smart TV,and none of the common fixes worked, I was convinced that running an Ethernet cable to the TV or getting a new, ultra-modern router would help. And while that, too, could have worked, thankfully, it didn’t come down to that. Something far simpler did the trick. That brings me to an important point: hardware upgrades aren’t always the solution. Sometimes simple tweaks work too. So, if you are experiencing buffering on your TV, consider enabling QoS on your router and assigning your smart TV or video streaming a higher priority than the rest.<\/p>\n
