The answer determined which models you could run, the context length you could push, and whether vision or audio were even on the table. The question still remains, but it’s not as black and white anymore because smaller models keep showing up that don’t really care about your specs as much.

Gemma 4’s smallest variant is one of those. It runs on 3GB of GPU memory, handles text, images and audio, and gets along fine with hardware most people already own…

Gemma 4 E2B is the smallest variant in Google’s Gemma 4 family, and the “E” stands for effective, because the model is technically larger than the 2B in its name suggests. Around 5 billion parameters at the file level, but it operates with the memory footprint of a 2B model. Google does this with something called Per-Layer Embeddings, where a chunk of the parameters live on the CPU instead of the GPU, so the GPU only has to deal with the core weights.

I don’t quite understand the depths of this – maths, compute, hardware and such are not my domain – but the effect is pretty straightforward when you’re a user. You’re basically working with a model that should be heavier than it is, but it acts lightweight.

It’s also natively multimodal, so text, images, and audio are all on the table out of the box. That includes document and PDF parsing, screen and UI understanding, chart and OCR work, and more. Half of the bigger models I’ve used don’t do this combination, and certainly not at this size. Context goes up to 128k tokens, which is genuinely a lot for something this small. Function calling is built in too. There’s a lot tucked into this tiny thing.

8GB of VRAM is borderline for local AI, but for E2B it’s basically luxury. I can run up to 12B comfortably on this card, so reaching for the smallest model in the family might seem like an odd move on paper, but the reason I keep coming back to it is that the extra headroom simply allows me to do more. I can push the context way up and still have vision and audio working, leave my browser open with twenty tabs, and also have a design editor running. With a bigger model, I’d have to make a compromise somewhere.

The default config in my runner puts E2B’s GPU usage around 4.7GB, which is more than 3GB but still completely fine on my card. To hit the 3GB number you’d drop your context, partially offload some layers to CPU, and maybe quantize the KV cache. I did this and got it to 2.87GB on the GPU. Performance takes a hit because CPU layers are slower than GPU layers, but it still feels responsive and I get to run a bunch of other things at the same time.

My favorite use case is throwing UI screenshots at it and asking what’s working and what isn’t. Having a second pair of eyes on a layout you stare at for too long is always helpful, and E2B picks up on user flow issues and inconsistencies really well. But it’s not just for screenshots; Gemma actually reads and understands subjects in a photo too.

For documents, I’ve mostly been using it on financial and medical PDFs that I’d rather not load into a cloud model. The longest I’ve fed it was around 20 pages and it kept up. It hasn’t hallucinated yet as far as I can tell (apart from the weird riddles I give it), though I think a lot of that is the runner doing the heavy lifting with how it chunks and retrieves from documents rather than the model itself.

Phones and Chromebooks don’t have VRAM in the way a gaming PC does. The model runs in unified memory shared with everything else, so the constraint is different but the principle is similar, you need a model small enough to not push everything else out. My iPhone 16 handles E2B perfectly, with vision and audio working well too (my runner of choice doesn’t have audio recording though, just text-to-speech).

I even got it running on my Chromebook, which is basically only good for light browsing tasks and note-taking. It’s the most underpowered device I own and you can definitely feel the difference; the tokens/second are pretty low. But the point is that I got a local AI to run at all, so I can use it when there’s no internet.

So that’s what’s interesting about E2B for me, the same model spans every device I own and the experience scales up rather than down. The PC has the headroom, the phone has the convenience, the Chromebook has the proof that the architecture means what it says.

My first Gemma 4 model was the E4B, it’s a bit more powerful when it comes to reasoning tasks and longer sessions, and gives me more coherent and structured responses. But the E2B isn’t a discard by any means and shouldn’t be underestimated. Google built this for edge devices and that use case worked out exactly as intended, but I’m going to keep running it on my PC too because it gives me a capable model with headroom to continue other tasks without pushing my PC to its limits.

Why it matters

News like this often changes audience expectations and competitors’ plans.

When one player makes a move, others usually react — it is worth reading the event in context.

What to look out for next

The full picture will become clear in time, but the headline already shows the dynamics of the industry.

Further statements and user reactions will add to the story.

The topic Gemma 4’s smallest model runs on 3GB of VRAM, and it’s the one I … Gemma 4's smallest model runs on 3GB of VRAM, and it's the one I actually…Read more

[1
195,247,1211,245,2748
post-19727","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-innovate","tag-audio","tag-context","tag-gemma","tag-model","tag-smallest
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.8 -
