The other day, I got hit with what felt like a random $100 charge on my credit card from Google. At first, I couldn’t figure out what it was for, but then I remembered that several years ago, I started paying for Google One because my Google Photos surpassed its 15GB storage limit. At this point, it feels like I have countless subscriptions, and it would be great to find a way to cut down on a few of them, or at the very least, drop to a lower tier, though I know that’s likely not realistic given how often I use Google’s cloud services for work.<\/p>\n

While dropping a tier isn’t really possible, given that I have 138GB in Drive, 83GB in Gmail, 5GB of device backups, and 188GB of Photos (yes, I’m a bit of a file hoarder), I figured it was time to do a bit of digital spring-cleaning. Given that my Drive is already somewhat curated, and I maintain a massive library of work emails I refuse to delete, Photos is the only platform where I can really cut back.<\/p>\n

And look, I know there’s no way I’m going to get my storage down to 15GB or even 100GB for that matter, but if I can get rid of several GBs of useless images from Google Photos’ cloud storage, that’s a win as far as I’m concerned. It’ll allow the 2TB of cloud storage I pay for to easily last for next decade and, on top of that, from a mental perspective, it really feels great to clear things out, even if it’s just digital files sitting in the cloud.<\/p>\n

At first, I thought there was no way I’d need to go through my Photos library manually, so I started looking into automated Google Photos cleanup tools. I know I have lots of photos I definitely want to hang on to in Photos, but there are probably countless duplicate and triple images in there, and likely at least a few accidental shots of the ground and of my fingers over the lens. I also figure I likely have hundreds of duplicate screenshots I’ve used for various stories over the years.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Google Photos doesn’t have a feature that automatically deletes duplicate photos (this is one clear advantage Apple’s Photos app has over Google’s). I considered taking the third-party route, but most of the apps I found seemed more than a bit shady and, in most cases, required some form of subscription. Looking at their reviews, they seem to be relatively unreliable, too. I’m also not comfortable giving a third-party app access to years of my private photos.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, I decided to remove duplicates and images I no longer need manually. There’s no way I could go through all 188GB of images in one sitting, but if I work through my library in 15-20-minute intervals once a day over the next few weeks, I’ll likely get through it in a week or so. This gradual approach also makes curating my Photos library feel like a far less monumental task.<\/p>\n

As a notorious digital hoarder, I was admittedly a bit nervous to delete these images. What if there’s something in there I end up really needing at some point? Nevertheless, I took the plunge, knowing that I’d be in full control of what I end up saving and what I delete. To make the process easier, I changed a few key settings in Google Photos:<\/p>\n

While grouping isn’t perfect and often combines random screenshots or photos taken in quick succession on a specific day, it makes them easier to identify when you’re scrolling through your Google Photos feed. After clicking on an image group, I swiped through the photos and decided what I wanted to keep and what I was cool with ditching. To delete an image, I clicked the Trash icon in the bottom right corner of the app’s menu.<\/p>\n

As a side note, I also decided to free up space on my Pixel 10 Pro by removing images stored directly on my smartphone that have already been backed up to the cloud. You definitely don’t need to do this if you’re just interested in cleaning up your Google Photos cloud storage, but I figured I might as well free up space on my phone, too. To make that happen, I followed the steps below:<\/p>\n

If you’re looking to go beyond Photos, navigate to Photos > your profile icon > Clean Up Space. You’ll then be given several options, including Large Drive Files, Emails With Large Attachments, and Files in Trash, giving you a more streamlined way to find large files to remove from your Google One storage. It’s likely that at some point, I’ll spend time going through the Photos app to better clean up the videos saved in my library<\/p>\n

The process is a bit tedious, but it’s also relaxing once you get into the groove, especially with a mindless TV show playing in the background. Between deleting duplicates, random photos of my fingers and the ground, accidental 4K videos, and at least some of the test images and videos I’ve snapped for Android phone reviews over the years, I’ve freed up over 50GB of space.<\/p>\n

That said, at this point, I’ve only made it to roughly 2020 in my Photos library and need to clean things up back to 2013, so I still have a lot of work ahead of me. Still, it feels good to clean up my Photos library, and I feel far more confident in the results since I’m doing it all manually, rather than relying on an AI algorithm or a shady third-party app.<\/p>\n
