You’d think that as someone who grew up having to remember passwords for everything from email accounts to banking apps and online games, I’d be fully on board with the idea of a passwordless future. I still remember getting all excited when Apple announced passkeys alongside iOS 16 at WWDC 2022. If there was any company that could pull something like this off, it was Apple. A year later, Google doubled down on passkeys, and that’s when it seemed like the industry was coming together to ditch passwords for good.<\/p>\n

Fast-forward to 2026, and now that I’ve actually used passkeys across multiple devices for several years, I have mixed feelings about them. Of course, they’re still a lot more secure than traditional passwords, but I don’t think they’ve made my digital life any easier. Sure, I’m not worrying about forgetting passwords anymore, but now I’m concerned about where my passkeys are stored, how account recovery works, and whether I’d still be able to access my accounts if I lost access to my devices.<\/p>\n

One of the biggest promises of passkeys is that they’re supposed to make logging in easier. In all fairness, they absolutely do when you’re using the same device that stores your passkey. If I’m signing into an app on my iPhone, authenticating with Face ID feels almost effortless compared to typing a password and entering a two-factor authentication code. The problem is that I’m not just using my iPhone or iPad for web browsing. In fact, most of the time, I’m browsing on my gaming PC, which runs Windows 11, and that’s when the convenience falls apart.<\/p>\n

All of a sudden, I need to scan a QR code with my iPhone or iPad, authenticate with Face ID, and approve the login request before I can access my account on my PC. With passwords, all I had to do was let my password manager autofill my credentials. Even installing the iCloud app on my PC and the iCloud Passwords extension on Edge doesn’t remove the need to reach for my iPhone during the login process. When I have to use two devices to log into an account instead of one, can we really call that convenience?<\/p>\n

Apple iCloud Keychain and Google Password Manager have been around for several years, so it’s not like passkeys suddenly forced us into sticking with a single ecosystem. The difference is that you could always export your passwords if you wanted to make the switch from iPhone to Android, for example. Until recently, transferring passkeys wasn’t really an option, and while passkey portability is finally improving, the overall experience is still inconsistent across ecosystems.<\/p>\n

For instance, Apple introduced cross-platform passkey imports and exports alongside iOS 26 last year, whereas Google only introduced this functionality this month. That’s certainly progress, but it also highlights how dependent passkey portability remains on individual ecosystems. Sure, you could install a third-party password manager and largely avoid the ecosystem issue, but that also defeats one of the key selling points of passkeys. The whole idea is that your device handles everything for you. You’re not really getting that with a third-party app. The smoothest experience is still reserved for those who aren’t constantly switching between operating systems.<\/p>\n

There’s no denying that passkeys are a huge improvement from a security standpoint. The main reason passwords have been such a problem for decades is that most people are terrible at managing them. And that includes me, because I was the kind of person who used the same password across multiple accounts when I was younger, simply because it was easier to remember. With passkeys, you don’t have to memorize or reuse anything, and more importantly, nobody can trick you into typing your credentials into a phishing website. In a world where data breaches and phishing attacks have become so common, that’s a win.<\/p>\n

However, getting people to switch is a completely different challenge. The average user isn’t going about their day worrying about phishing attacks or whether their passwords have appeared in a data breach. They care more about whether they can log into an account quickly and without frustration. When passkeys struggle to work seamlessly outside their ecosystem and require another device to authenticate, the experience can feel more like 2FA 2.0 instead of the convenience we were promised by going passwordless. If anything, I’m now thinking about which device holds my passkeys and what happens if I ever lose access to it.<\/p>\n

Passkeys were a mess when they first launched on Apple devices, with no clarity on how they would work across platforms or how account recovery would be handled. Fast-forward to today, and you can now export your passkeys to other password managers using the Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP). That alone gives me confidence that many of the cross-platform issues are eventually going to be solved. Then again, passkeys haven’t really made logins simpler for those who switch between various devices. That doesn’t mean I’m going back to passwords and compromising security, though. But until the experience becomes seamless across devices, I can’t help but feel that many users would rather stick with what they already know.<\/p>\n
