I wasn’t sure which distro I wanted to settle with, and I wasn’t sure what I wanted out of Linux. So, I did what anyone would do: go on a wild Linux road trip where I would install pretty much any OS I thought looked cool and see which ones I liked the best. Ventoy was a real help here; I still have my USB drive sitting around, filled to the brim with ISOs like some sort of open-source Swiss army knife.

As part of my experimentation, I gave Fedora Atomic a try. At first, I didn’t know what the fuss was about; it seemed like just the same as any OS, but you couldn’t install apps via the console. However, when I finally made the jump, I found myself loving Fedora Atomic so much that I don’t think I could return to Ubuntu.

If you’ve never heard of them before, Fedora Atomic operating systems are a different strain of OS than what you’re used to. There are two key parts to a Fedora Atomic spin: the first is that it’s, well, atomic. This means that, when it performs a system update, it downloads a snapshot containing all the changes to a separate location, then swaps to it on restart. Because it doesn’t edit the current files, there are no instances of an update editing half the files, then failing; it either performs the update in full, or it doesn’t update at all.

The second part is what I found the most interesting. Fedora Atomic operating systems are immutable, which means that nothing has permission to edit the system files, including you. At first, it sounds like a downgrade, because you can’t install anything via console; you have to use Flatpaks or AppImages, and if you really can’t install things that way, you have to layer it in. However, once you get used to that hurdle, you’ll notice you have to reinstall the OS a lot less (if ever), simply because the system files aren’t getting clogged with edits.

Remember how I said that the Fedora Atomic structure means that the OS downloads a separate snapshot with all the changes, then swaps to it on restart? While it’s great for ensuring that an update doesn’t botch itself midway through, it also cuts out a lot of time when applying the update.

With an operating system like Ubuntu, you need to download the update first, then apply the update during a restart or shutdown. It usually takes some time, and it can be annoying if you want to turn your PC off for the night and get caught up with an update. Fedora Atomic doesn’t have that problem at all; the majority of the work is done when the OS downloads the update to your machine. Once it’s done, all you need to do is restart, and the OS “swaps tracks” from the old snapshot to the new one. There’s not even a ‘Please wait, installing update’ screen; it just happens.

After a decade of loyalty, I finally bid farewell to Ubuntu, but not without a heavy heart.

The cool thing about this “swapping tracks” update method is that the OS doesn’t delete the old files during an update. By default, Fedora Atomic will keep two snapshots on hand: the current one and the previous one. You can pick between them during the boot process, and 99.9% of the time, I’ll just let the OS boot into the current snapshot.

However, if an update introduces something bad, fixing it is as easy as restarting the system, choosing the previous snapshot during boot, then using the terminal to make it the primary option when you turn on your PC. You don’t need to install any apps or set up any tools to get this feature, either; it’s just part of how an atomic OS works by default.

I didn’t have many issues with Ubuntu stability when I installed a system update, but that extra layer of security that a Fedora Atomic distro gives me by default is just too good to pass up. It gives me a huge amount of peace knowing that, if a system update messes up my daily driver, I can restart my PC and revert it to an identical snapshot from before the update with very little fuss.

Why it matters

News like this often changes audience expectations and competitors’ plans.

When one player makes a move, others usually react — it is worth reading the event in context.

What to look out for next

The full picture will become clear in time, but the headline already shows the dynamics of the industry.

Further statements and user reactions will add to the story.

The topic I ditched Ubuntu for Fedora Atomic, and now I can’t imagine going back to … I ditched Ubuntu for Fedora Atomic, and now I can't imagine going back to a…Read more

[1
955,1113,298,538,312
post-14763","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-innovate","tag-atomic","tag-fedora","tag-system","tag-ubuntu","tag-update
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
