Every screen capture gets dumped unceremoniously into a “Screenshots” folder with an absurd filename like, “Screenshot-2026-03-06-182107” with absolutely no additional context. You can sort them by date or size, but that’s literally as far as the organization goes. The Downloads folder is perhaps even worse. Over time, it can fill up with duplicate PDFs, installers you only needed once and never again, receipts from ten months ago, all in one flat messy directory that Windows has never once offered to help you clean up.<\/p>\n

For this reason, I brought Cowork in. I specified the directory for my screenshots folder, and gave it a rather simple instruction to sort by file type into subfolders, rename files based on their content where possible, and delete nothing. Within a few minutes, I could see the difference. The sheer amount of cognitive load it presumably saved me from would probably go unnoticed over the next couple of weeks, so it’s probably best to acknowledge it now.<\/p>\n

The Scheduled Tasks feature makes it even better. I can set the same routine to run weekly or fortnightly, which means the folder will tidy itself periodically without me having to think about it again. For all of Microsoft’s focus on AI and Copilot, it seems surprising they didn’t come up with a simple utility like this before a non-coding user like myself.<\/p>\n

A lot of users put a considerable amount of trust in third-party debloating utilities, and perhaps for good reason. Reputable tools like Chris Titus Tech’s WinUtil exist specifically for this task and are widely trusted by the community. They work as promised, and for more people, that’s more than enough.<\/p>\n

My specific problem with such utilities is that, while they offer toggles and categories, the level of control is still limited to what someone else decided the options should be. No two users use their PC the same way, which means their debloating needs vary just as much. What a million other users want removed from their system might differ significantly from what I want, and it can’t be fair to expect a third-party utility to account for that. With Cowork, I can design a debloating script that targets only the services and applications that stand in my way, and nothing else.<\/p>\n

The process is literally as simple as describing my workflow, my entertainment habits, and the software I depend on. Cowork generates a PowerShell script tailored to that description, with comments explaining every removal. I’ve since set it to run periodically via Scheduled Tasks, which means my Windows installation stays lean without me having to revisit the process every time the dreaded Patch Tuesday comes along.<\/p>\n

One of the key usability issues many users on Windows 11 frequently highlight is how, over time, the OS accumulates temporary files, caches, error reports and logs across a dozen locations that the average user would never think or otherwise bother to check. Even if you’ve located the directories and know exactly what’s safe to clear, doing so manually would mean stepping away from whatever you were doing, whether that’s work or entertainment, to perform housekeeping that the OS should have been handling on its own. It’s maintenance that yields no reward besides reclaimed storage, and it has to be repeated regularly to stay effective.<\/p>\n

To fix this, I used Cowork to build a utility that scans nine common temp locations, and shows exactly how much space is being occupied before anything is touched through a neat little GUI. Nothing is deleted without confirmation, and after running the utility a few times to my satisfaction, I scheduled it to run without the GUI weekly in the background, logging what it freed to a text file.<\/p>\n

If you’re reading this and find yourself unimpressed by how basic and unremarkable these utilities sound, my point stands. File organization, basic debloating, and clearing up the clutter produced by the OS are basic housekeeping tasks that a modern operating system should have addressed many years ago. The fact that it took a third-party AI tool and a couple of prompts to build all three in a couple of hours says less about how capable Cowork is, but rather, it says more about how little effort Microsoft has put in to prioritize everyday user experience despite its push towards on-device AI.<\/p>\n
