If you’re using a Samsung Galaxy device, the dashboard appears a bit different from other Android brands. On Samsung’s One UI, you need to go to Settings -> Security and privacy.<\/p>\n

I prefer the privacy dashboard’s view to the permission manager’s, since it highlights which apps are accessing permissions and how often they do so. It does this in a user-friendly way and even includes timestamps for each time an app accesses a specific permission.<\/p>\n

When it came to my location permissions, most of the apps highlighted by the privacy dashboard were the usual suspects. These included my weather app, Pok\u00e9mon Go, Google Maps, and Facebook (since I use Facebook Marketplace).<\/p>\n

However, there were a few surprising inclusions, such as my banking app and Truecaller. I also didn’t realize how often my Home Assistant app was accessing my location. I decided to remove the location permission for Truecaller, since it doesn’t need this to function for call screening. I already have mixed feelings about using the app, since it requires access to your contacts. But spam calls are such a problem locally, and built-in call screening tools don’t work well here, so it has become a necessary tool.<\/p>\n

The most notable permissions used in the last 24 hours were my camera and microphone, but the apps that accessed these were all expected. Though if I had spotted anything that was an issue, the dashboard includes a Manage permission button that makes it easy to revoke access for specific apps.<\/p>\n

This allows you to see other permissions used in the past 24 hours, including call logs, contacts, physical activity, SMS, and media permissions. If a specific permission hasn’t been used in the last day, it is greyed out.<\/p>\n

When it came to my contacts, I was surprised by which apps had access. This included my reminder app TickTick and IFTTT. X (formerly Twitter) also had access, even though I don’t remember granting the permission. So, rather than letting the apps continue to access my contacts, I used the permission manager to revoke their access.<\/p>\n

For apps that were frequently accessing permissions, I also looked at my phone’s battery usage to see if any were draining my phone’s power. While Home Assistant was flagged for frequent background refreshes, it didn’t use even 1% of my battery power, so it’s not a problem. Likewise, my weather app wasn’t consuming much power.<\/p>\n

If you’re concerned about excessive permissions and potential malware, I’d also recommend running Google Play Protect scans on your device. They don’t always spot every problematic app, but they can be helpful. You can perform a scan by going to Settings -> Security & privacy -> App security -> Google Play Protect -> Scan. If you don’t find this exact menu, search for Play Protect in your settings.<\/p>\n

I always recommend going over your app permissions and account settings to protect your privacy. Even as a privacy-conscious user, I’ve granted access to permissions I didn’t mean to for certain apps.
