My NAS started out as a file dumping ground, then doubled as a Plex server for streaming my movie collection. Eventually, it occurred to me that ROMs are just files, too, so why not use the NAS as an emulation server? Extending its duties to retro games felt like an obvious next step.

Now my NAS is packed with all the console libraries I frequently play, and they’re streamed to a mini PC that’s running EmulationStation in the living room. This started off as a backup to my physical copies and a way to round out the roster of available titles, but has since become the only retro gaming setup I use. My shelf of physical consoles rarely gets touched anymore because having all the titles accessible on a single piece of hardware is just too convenient.

Transform your game collection from a cluttered mess of folders into a stunning, searchable library with RomM’s game management magic.

What I like about this setup is that my ROMs live alongside all the other files on my network. The NAS handles storage, which is straightforward: one directory per platform, and each folder contains ROMs. The directory is exposed via SMB, so the mini PC can access it from downstairs. The mini PC mounts the share automatically at boot and has no actual content stored on it. But EmulationStation doesn’t care where your library is; it operates the same with an SMB share as it would with local files.

EmulationStation (ES-DE) is the perfect interface to serve a library full of ROMs. It’s an open-source, full-screen application that can run on Windows, Linux, and macOS. It handles everything about the frontend, organizing your game catalog by system, but you’ll still need to grab emulators separately. The menus are easy to navigate with a controller, and browsing for a title to play is a lot like perusing movie titles on Netflix. I’ve configured it to open automatically at boot, and it makes the whole experience feel seamless. It also helps that the controller is instantly recognized, so it’s as simple as picking it up, selecting a title, and hitting play.

Pulling all the metadata for your library can take a few minutes if you have a lot of games, but it only needs to happen once. EmulationStation’s scraper downloads box art, descriptions, and ratings from online databases. Once you point the software to your ROMs directory, it will gather all the imagery and summaries for each one. The presentation of your whole game library, complete with tiled box art and themed backgrounds for each system, makes it feel like a polished catalog that’s fun to browse and select a title from.

My collection of ROMs started out as a backup. Every console is a single point of failure, and they’re all starting to show their age. Plus, all these consoles take up shelf space and come with their own tangled mess of cables. I got tired of dealing with that, and eventually my “backup” just became a replacement. It didn’t require me to do anything special, because letting my NAS serve ROMs, and my HTPC run EmulationStation were free solutions that I could delegate to existing hardware.

The reason I keep my ROMs on the NAS is because that’s where I put anything important. Everything on the NAS is stored on a RAID array, and is part of a nightly backup. You can definitely put everything on one system if you want to, but I prefer to have a single location where all important files live. Everything else, including what’s on my mini PC, is easily replaceable.

I have to admit there have been a handful of times when I couldn’t get a game to work properly on an emulator, so I resorted to firing up the original console because it just works. Tweaking emulators and controller configs can be annoying, and it’s something you don’t need to deal with on original hardware. That said, everything works most of the time, and I keep brief notes on how to address finicky problems in case they come up again.

As far as the original experience goes — thumbing through Nintendo cartridges, squinting at a CRT TV, and the distinct click of a real SNES controller — that’s pretty much impossible to emulate with my setup. If your primary motivation is nostalgia, this won’t be the best approach. It gets you close because it puts the actual games in front of you, but it may not be quite enough to mentally transport you back to your after-school Mortal Kombat sessions. I’ve accepted that trade-off and am happy enough to have a centralized library of retro games at my fingertips.

If you already have a NAS, it’s not a big jump to add ROMs to it. The only other component you need to complete the experience is a graphical frontend, and EmulationStation fills that role nicely. It’ll never fully replicate the console experience, but it offers a lot that the original hardware can’t match.

Why it matters

News like this often changes audience expectations and competitors’ plans.

When one player makes a move, others usually react — it is worth reading the event in context.

What to look out for next

The full picture will become clear in time, but the headline already shows the dynamics of the industry.

Further statements and user reactions will add to the story.

The topic My NAS became a retro gaming machine, and my consoles haven’t been touched since … My NAS became a retro gaming machine, and my consoles haven't been touched sinceRead more

[1
2129,192,1371,709,2128
post-13074","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-innovate","tag-emulationstation","tag-files","tag-library","tag-retro","tag-roms
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
