Unfortunately, it seems that’s no longer the case. according to the data several Reddit posts, the 2013 Chromecast no longer appears as a casting device with YouTube and HBO Max (via 9to5Google). Interestingly, some apps still seem to work with the streaming stick, including Spotify and Disney+, for example.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, Google hasn’t released a statement about why the Chromecast is no longer working with these apps, but it’s likely a compatibility issue tied to security and app updates. It also backs up a 2023 statement from Google saying that original Chromecast users “may notice a degradation in performance.” XDA has reached out to Google for comment and will update this story with more information if we hear back.<\/p>\n

YouTube and HBO Max are likely just the beginning, and as future streaming app updates are released, Chromecast support will be dropped from more streaming platforms. On the user end, there’s likely not much you can do other than buy a new streaming device.<\/p>\n

Google has long since moved on to the Google TV Streamer set-top box and its Cast-supporting Android\/Google TV platform that’s built directly into televisions. A few years ago, I had a Chromecast plugged into an old monitor in my bedroom that I was using as a TV, but I eventually swapped it out for a Fire TV Stick Max because Casting started to lag significantly.<\/p>\n
