The topic I don’t use Claude Code, but Anthropic’s latest update just made my Pro\u2026<\/strong> is currently the subject of lively discussion \u2014 readers and analysts are keeping a close eye on developments.<\/p>\n

This is taking place in a dynamic environment: companies\u2019 decisions and competitors\u2019 reactions can quickly change the picture.<\/p>\n

Subscriptions and I don’t really mix, I’d rather push a free trial as far as it’ll go, settle for the free tier indefinitely, or just find an alternative tool altogether. Claude Pro is one of the very few I’ve actually stuck with, and even then I’ve reassessed whether the subscription is worth it several times. When the news broke in April that Anthropic might be removing Claude Code from the Pro plan, it didn’t really affect me directly because I don’t use it, but it still left a small bad taste; my plan was getting potentially clipped, and that’s the kind of thing that makes you start looking at alternatives.<\/p>\n

Then the SpaceX deal happened a couple of weeks later, and the changes that came with it weren’t just Code-specific. The improvements extended into the parts of Pro I actually use every day, and any second thoughts I had about keeping my subscription pretty much disappeared.<\/p>\n

On April 21, with no announcement, Anthropic updated its pricing page and the Claude Code support docs to remove access from Pro – a red x replaced the checkmark and the doc title shifted from “Using Claude Code with your Pro or Max plan” to “Using Claude Code with your Max plan”. Developers noticed by comparing the live page to an archived version from earlier that month, and within hours the story was everywhere. What made it weirder is that Anthropic’s site was inconsistent with itself – the pricing grid showed Code excluded from Pro, but the Claude Code product page and the CLI itself still indicated Pro access, so there was no clear answer on what had actually changed.<\/p>\n

So even though Code coming out of Pro wouldn’t have changed much for me directly, the bigger question was whether anything else I rely on would be next, plus it just leaves you wondering who you’re actually subscribing to.<\/p>\n

On May 6, at Anthropic’s Code with Claude conference in San Francisco, it was announced that Anthropic had partnered with SpaceX to take over the compute capacity at SpaceX’s Colossus 1 data center in Memphis. The optics are a bit awkward – SpaceX now owns xAI, and Musk had publicly called Anthropic “misanthropic and evil” a few months back. So this partnership is a bit of a plot twist, and the only real explanation to me seems like Anthropic needed the compute badly enough to set all of that aside. Either way, Anthropic is now getting more than 300 megawatts and over 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs.<\/p>\n

The changes all went live the same day as the announcement. Five-hour rate limits doubled across Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, and peak-hour throttling was also lifted for Pro and Max. On the API side, Opus rate limits went up too: 1,500% on input tokens per minute and 900% on output for Tier 1 customers.<\/p>\n

The announced changes read like a Code story and most of the coverage approached it that way, but the five-hour rate limit doubling isn’t Code-exclusive, Anthropic’s support docs does confirm that all Claude surfaces share one usage limit. So while it remains a bit of a black box whether typing into the web browser gets the exact same 2x multiplier as the terminal tool, the macro effect is the same: by offloading the massive developer load onto Colossus 1, the overall ceiling rose for everyone.<\/p>\n

For my actual workflow, that translates to real headroom I wasn’t getting a month ago. Artifacts and the interactive visuals, some of the features I rely on the most for design work, eat through usage faster than regular chat because of how they’re built, even on the paid plan, so the bigger pool means more iteration before hitting a wall. Same deal for long Projects sessions where a dense knowledge base is loaded and every message is then heavier. Even mid-morning US hours, which I used to work around because Claude would noticeably slow down, can now be more consistent.<\/p>\n

The free tier got none of this either. So now the gap between free and Pro just got much wider, and that’s not usually how these things go – companies in a capacity crunch usually tighten across the board. Anthropic went the other way, and for a non-Code user who was questioning the subscription a month ago, that’s actually the most convincing thing they could have done.<\/p>\n

The SpaceX deal got covered as a Claude Code story, and for the most part it was. But the compute underneath it feeds into everything on Pro, and the limits and throttling that have been making the plan feel unreliable got addressed across the board. I’ve yet to use Code and still come out of this with a better subscription than a month ago.<\/p>\n
