I have a lot of devices on my desk, but it’s not often I get something in a new format. It’s even less often that I get something that I’ve daydreamed about owning for most of my life, but that’s what is here with the HP EliteBoard G1a. It’s a mini PC stuffed inside a slimline keyboard, and it’s every bit as fun as it sounds. It’s essentially an HP EliteBook G1a but without the screen or the extra weight, and I’m here for that.<\/p>\n

It’s a format that hasn’t been around for four decades, ever since the Commodore 64 was the pinnacle of home PC use, but it’s not really made for home users. Instead, it’s aimed firmly at office workers who like the portability of a smaller PC, while having a one-cable connection to their monitor. If you already have a screen you like and don’t care about a laptop, this might be the device for you. For me, it’s not quite the cyberdeck I’ve been jonesing for, but maybe a pair of AR glasses instead of a desktop monitor will change that.<\/p>\n

The HP EliteBoard G1a is a Ryzen APU mini PC housed inside a keyboard, which is just fantastic. It might be more of a niche device, with most mobile computer users needing a laptop, but I love that it exists.<\/p>\n

The HP EliteBoard G1a was announced at CES 2026 and is now on sale. It starts at $1,549 on HP’s website, but that’s for the version with a permanently attached USB cable, an AMD Ryzen AI 5 PRO 340, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. All models come with an HP 675M Bluetooth mouse and a canvas sleeve. Some models also come with a 65W USB-C power source, and the HP USB-C dongle, which plugs into your monitor’s HDMI port, and adds Ethernet, and another HDMI port for dual-monitor use.<\/p>\n

I’ve wanted a computer inside a portable keyboard since forever, because of years and years of playing Shadowrun as a TTRPG. The EliteBoard G1a is so close to what I envisioned as a decker that it might as well be from the shadowy realms of the world after magic came back. Inside is an AMD Ryzen AI 300 APU, some RAM and storage, and some models have a small battery designed to get you from your desk to a conference room without having to power down your PC.<\/p>\n

It has a paltry two USB-C ports, one of which is USB4, so it can power the EliteBoard and send a display signal to your monitor, or the second slower port can be used to power the device from the wall. My review unit came with an HDMI hub that adds Ethernet, a second HDMI port, USB-C charging, and a separate connection to the device.<\/p>\n

It’s also very repairable, with the keyboard deck coming off to reveal SODIMM RAM, a 2280 M.2 SSD, and plenty of user-serviceable parts, like the dual speakers. It comes with a wireless mouse, but it’ll work with any Bluetooth mouse if you have a preference. The keyboard gets some extra points for having nice-feeling rubber domes inside, and I’d love to see this on a laptop, if you’re listening, HP.<\/p>\n

The APUs used in the EliteBoard are laptop chips, and it’s not surprising that it performs similarly to other mobile devices we’ve tested. What’s impressive is that it does this in a tiny space, much smaller than even the mini PCs we often get to play with. It even outperforms some of this year’s laptops, which surprised me.<\/p>\n

Gaming wasn’t really an option, though, with the built-in Radeon GPU enough for productivity tasks, but it struggled with games even at 1080p. Oh, and the internal battery doesn’t last for very long, but it’s not intended for long use sessions.<\/p>\n

The APU gets hot under any load, with 94 \u00b0C often showing on my tests. It idles at around 50 \u00b0C, which might be an issue for longevity, but it doesn’t transfer through the keyboard, so it still felt cool to type on. The fans are kinda loud, too, but they are doing a great job of keeping things from overheating, so maybe they get a pass. I don’t think I’d want to use it long-term without ANC headphones on, though.<\/p>\n

The HP EliteBoard G1a is an interesting device, designed to keep IT managers happy while building out startup offices. That’s probably why the product page has a “contact sales” button; this isn’t a device for you or me. Maybe it will be if enough workplaces buy them to replace mini PCs or laptops, but until then, this is a quirky device that I’m glad exists, even if I don’t want to use it every day.<\/p>\n
