The biggest reason to reuse your old NVMe as an external drive? It’s still very fast. When PCIe 3.0 SSDs are still fast enough for 95% of users, you start to see why they’d be overkill once you put them behind a USB connection. The SSD enclosure I have uses a USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection, which tops out at 10Gbps. In the real world, that’s usually a maximum of around 1050MB\/s, which is a third of the read speeds my 960 EVO is actually capable of. So, the enclosure itself becomes the bottleneck long before the SSD even gets a chance to shine.<\/p>\n

That said, despite being heavily limited by USB’s bandwidth, it still outperformed every other flash drive I’ve bought to date. Theoretically, it should perform similarly to the Samsung T7 portable SSD that I almost paid full price for. And if I ever want my file transfers to be faster, all I really need to do is spend a little more on a USB4 enclosure instead of replacing the SSD itself. That level of headroom is honestly what makes older PCIe 3.0 NVMe drives feel so overkill for external storage in the first place.<\/p>\n

Repurposing your old NVMe instead of buying a dedicated flash drive has its perks. You’re still carrying around a full-sized M.2 SSD externally, and once you start using it beyond basic file transfers, you’ll realize why it’s indispensable. For starters, it has the capacity to hold proper backups and the speed to move large folders without testing your patience. Also, let’s not forget the reliability advantage of using a dedicated SSD controller instead of the cheapest flash storage possible.<\/p>\n

More importantly, if one of the SSDs in your PC suddenly fails, or you need to reinstall Windows, having an external NVMe drive around makes backups and file recovery significantly less stressful. Sure, it may not be as fast as your Gen 4 or Gen 5 drive, but it’s not like you’ll be able to tell the difference anyway. At this point, I’d much rather use an old NVMe SSD inside an enclosure than a traditional thumb drive. The best part is that you’re paying almost the same price as a cheap thumb drive since you already own the SSD itself.<\/p>\n

Where flash drives still have the edge is portability. You can carry it around in your pocket and barely even notice it’s there, which obviously isn’t the case with an NVMe enclosure. The extra bulk is one thing, but carrying around another cable can get annoying pretty quickly if you’re used to the simplicity of a thumb drive. Sure, you could argue mini NVMe enclosures like the one from Satechi exist, but how many of you have an M.2 2230 SSD lying around? On top of that, thermal throttling can still be a problem depending on the SSD and enclosure you’re using.<\/p>\n

That said, as long as you do your research and get the right enclosure for your needs, you can avoid most of these inconveniences. A good aluminum enclosure with proper thermal pads can keep temperatures under control. And if you really don’t want to give up the portability, an M.2 2230 SSD inside the Satechi Mini NVMe enclosure can give you the best of both worlds. As for me, I don’t mind these minor inconveniences because I’m getting far more out of it in exchange for that extra bulk. In fact, it made my decade-old 960 EVO useful again, so if that’s the price I have to pay, I’d gladly do it.<\/p>\n

Unless you really want to get some of the cash back by selling it off, I genuinely think repurposing your old NVMe SSD inside an enclosure is probably the best thing you can do with it. The fact that you need the latest USB standard to get the most out of your NVMe from a decade ago is proof of how overkill they still are for external storage. You get to save money, give your “outdated” SSD a second life, and end up with portable storage that still feels dramatically faster than most flash drives. Honestly, I don’t think I can ever go back to normal thumb drives again.<\/p>\n
