Even then, I thought it was only a matter of time before I started benefiting from those speeds with Microsoft DirectStorage gaining traction. Fast-forward to 2026, and I still don’t think any game really benefits from that theoretical bandwidth. In fact, many games still don’t use DirectStorage at all, almost making me feel like I have a PCIe 5.0 SSD just for bragging rights. And honestly, that has made me realize that storage speeds have outpaced what modern games can actually take advantage of.<\/p>\n

Gen5 SSDs are technical marvels, but most consumers just don’t need one yet<\/p>\n

The problem with Gen 5 SSDs is mostly the marketing. It leans heavily on sequential read and write speeds because those numbers are easy to understand and compare. But when you see a drive that advertises 14,900MB\/s, roughly twice what the best Gen 4 drives claimed, it’s hard not to expect some kind of noticeable real-world improvement as a consumer. That’s why I went with the T700 without giving it too much thought. If game load times improved by at least 20\u201330%, I would’ve still considered it a worthwhile upgrade.<\/p>\n

But it took me a while to realize that games don’t behave the same way synthetic benchmarks like CrystalDiskMark do. Those benchmarks can hammer the drive with large, clean, sequential transfers that allow Gen 5 drives to stretch their legs. Game loading, on the other hand, isn’t nearly as straightforward. It involves fetching many small files, unpacking compressed assets, and initializing shaders before you can move around in a new area, all while the CPU continues to process data in the background. That’s why doubling your SSD’s sequential bandwidth barely improves your load times once you’re already on a decent PCIe 3.0 NVMe.<\/p>\n

One of the biggest reasons Gen 5 drives feel underwhelming for gaming is that we’ve already crossed the point of diminishing returns years ago. If you’re still gaming on a SATA SSD, upgrading to a Gen 5 drive will still obviously feel like a big jump, but a PCIe 3.0 NVMe from the late 2010s will also get you 95% of the way there. Those drives were already fast enough to drastically reduce most of the painfully long loading screens people associated with mechanical hard drives. That’s why the jump from PCIe 3.0 to 5.0 feels nowhere near as transformative.<\/p>\n

At this point, most games are usually waiting on other components, like your CPU, to process game data and initialize shaders before the game is actually ready. By upgrading to a Gen 4 or Gen 5 SSD, you’re just speeding up one part of the pipeline. So if the game needs to wait for CPU-side or engine-level processing to complete, faster storage won’t help reduce those delays. Sure, the game may load a second or two faster, but that’s not enough to make a noticeable difference unless you’re comparing instances side by side for a benchmark.<\/p>\n

At this point, I can only defend my purchase by saying it may prove its worth at some point down the line when games actually catch up. After all, DirectStorage is still evolving, and Microsoft has clearly been pushing toward a future where games rely more heavily on fast storage and GPU-assisted asset streaming. So I wouldn’t be surprised if Gen 5 SSDs eventually become far more relevant for gaming than they are today.<\/p>\n

But that’s the problem. This is the exact same mindset that I had when I bought the T700, and so far, it doesn’t look like games have progressed enough to benefit from that extra bandwidth. Even in the games that use DirectStorage, a Gen 4 drive is fast enough that a Gen 5 one won’t make a meaningful difference. So, unless you’re a creative professional working with massive 4K or 8K RAW files or moving hundreds of GBs of data every day, it’s hard to justify upgrading to a Gen 5 drive.<\/p>\n

As impressive as Gen 5 SSDs are on a technical level, especially given how far NVMe drives have come, my experience with the Crucial T700 is proof that gaming simply hasn’t evolved enough to benefit from those absurd speeds. At best, you’re shaving a second or two off loading times compared to a Gen 4 SSD, so unless you’re still on SATA, there’s no reason to rush and splurge on these newer drives. Sure, that might change in future, but then again, you’re betting on a possibility like I did when I first bought this SSD.<\/p>\n
