Ever since I bought the Alienware AW3423DW and AW2725DF OLED monitors for my multi-monitor setup, I’ve always had a hard time switching back to my LG LCD for gaming, even though it’s a higher resolution panel. I’d still happily use it for regular desktop work because it’s brighter and sharper, but when it came to gaming, I’d only really use it if I wanted to experience a game at 4K. Then again, resolution alone wasn’t enough to make up for weaker contrast, IPS glow, and slower pixel response times.<\/p>\n

A few months ago, I decided to finally bite the bullet and get the Alienware AW2725Q, so 4K gaming doesn’t feel like a compromise anymore. Now, I almost get the best of both worlds: LCD’s text clarity and OLED’s picture quality. Even outside of gaming, this is the first OLED I’ve used where I don’t constantly feel tempted to switch back to LCD for desktop use. At this point, I’m convinced I can just sell my LG 27GN950 for some spare cash.<\/p>\n

The biggest issue I always had with both of my 1440p OLED monitors was never gaming. Even though it’s not as crispy as my 4K LCD, the near-perfect black levels, color reproduction, and motion clarity more than made up for it. But that lack of detail always bothered me whenever I used the monitor to browse the web, write articles for XDA, or edit videos in Premiere Pro. Text clarity has always been an issue on older OLED panels due to the subpixel arrangement, especially on my first-gen AW3423DW monitor, and the lower pixel density at 1440p only made the fringing more noticeable.<\/p>\n

With the AW2725Q, though, text looks just as crisp as my LG 27GN950 to the point where I barely think about the panel type anymore during regular use. Yes, it still uses a triangular RGB subpixel layout, but the jump to 4K at 27 inches takes the pixel density to 166 PPI, and that has a big impact on text clarity. Unlike my 1440p OLEDs, fringing isn’t something I have to deal with anymore. And for the first time, I don’t feel like I’m choosing between OLED’s image quality and the sharpness of a 4K panel anymore.<\/p>\n

Normally, I’d say going from 160Hz to 240Hz isn’t nearly as noticeable as jumping from 60Hz to 144Hz, especially on LCD monitors. Of course, motion will look smoother, but slower pixel response times and overshoot artifacts tend to make the difference feel smaller. But when you go from an LCD to an OLED, the improvement in motion clarity is noticeable even at the same refresh rate, and that’s mainly because of OLED’s near-instant pixel response times. Even the fastest LCD gaming monitors that advertise 0.5ms in ideal gray-to-gray scenarios are no match for the 0.03ms response times OLEDs claim.<\/p>\n

That’s a massive difference when you’re playing fast-paced competitive titles where motion clarity is your top priority. And since OLEDs are self-emissive, they don’t need aggressive overdrive tuning to achieve those numbers. This means you’re not dealing with pixel overshoot and inverse ghosting, which still plague LCD gaming monitors today. With the jump to 4K\/240Hz, this is the first monitor I own that genuinely feels equally good for both competitive and AAA gaming. In fact, I barely use my AW2725DF these days. 360Hz is technically better, but I’m not maxing out its refresh rate most of the time, anyway.<\/p>\n

If there’s one thing that still annoys me when I have my LG monitor right next to my OLEDs, it’s the brightness disparity. I need to lower the brightness of my 27GN950 by half to match the max full-screen brightness of my AW2725Q. That’s still one of the biggest advantages LCD panels have over OLEDs, even though the new tandem OLED panels have narrowed the gap. With LCD monitors, you also don’t have to worry about screen burn-in and proactively avoid static elements on your screen, so if you want that peace of mind, they still have a clear long-term advantage.<\/p>\n

That said, those trade-offs just don’t bother me enough to outweigh what a 4K OLED brings to the table for both gaming and regular use. The brightness would’ve been a concern if I were sitting in a bright room, but most of the time, I actually have my lights turned off, especially while gaming. Yes, it sucks that I have to keep a black background and set Windows to automatically hide the taskbar, but that’s what helped me avoid screen burn-in on my AW3423DW for four years. At this point, I’m used to babysitting my monitor, but I remind myself it’s all worth it whenever I load up a game.<\/p>\n

As a panel technologies, OLED has always felt like the endgame for gaming to me, which is why I was quick to splurge on the AW3423DW and AW2725DF when they came out. But at 1440p, resolution was still a factor that constantly reminded me why I kept an LCD monitor around in my multi-monitor setup. Now, with the AW2725Q, my setup just feels more complete, and if there’s one thing that’s holding me back right now, that’d be the refresh rate. But since we don’t have a faster option yet, I can confidently say this is the closest I’ve gotten to an endgame monitor so far.<\/p>\n
