Reliable leaker Sonny Dickson today posted a photo of dummy units showing the final size of the iPhone Fold next to iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
You can see the foldable iPhone has a passport-esque form factor, wider and shorter than the other pro iPhones when closed. When unfolded, the large display will measure about 7.8-inches diagonally. In terms of screen surface area, the Fold will be closer to an iPad mini than the Pro Max.
Apple’s design for the foldable is somewhat controversial as it clearly prioritizes the unfoldable experience. When the screen is shut, the width of the closed phone may make it somewhat unwieldy to use for some. It certainly differentiates it from the form factor of Apple’s slab phones.
However, by making it a bit wider when closed, it allows the unfolded screen to be an expansive landscape experience. Many foldable Android phones have square aspect ratios when unfolded, which is less ideal when watching 16:9 media like movies and television shows.
A 7.8-inch screen doesn’t sound that different to the 6.9-inch screen size of the Pro Max, on paper. But in practice, the difference in the display’s aspect ratio means the foldable’s screen is actually much closer to the iPad mini in overall usable screen size.
Obviously, dummy models are not perfect recreations of the real things. They are used by companies to help guide the production of third-party cases and other accessories, before Apple releases official schematics.
In the image above of the dummy, you can see the very noticeable hinge halfway between the inside display. In practice, the iPhone Fold won’t actually look like this. Many rumors suggest Apple has developed a near-invisible crease, so the real thing should just look like one seamless display. Some design features like camera holes and MagSafe charging ring are also not visible in these dummy units.
One thing that is not shown on the iPhone Fold is a Face ID sensor bar. As previously reported by Bloomberg and others, Apple was unable to fit the Face ID components in the thin body of the Fold, so it will use Touch ID in the side button instead.
Unfolded, the iPhone Fold will be less than 5 milimeters thick, making it the thinnest iOS device ever. When folded, it will be around 9.5 milimeters, a bit thicker than the 8.75mm thickness of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.
