The topic iOS 27 makes a very strong case for upgrading to a new iPhone is currently the subject of lively discussion — readers and analysts are keeping a close eye on developments.
This is taking place in a dynamic environment: companies’ decisions and competitors’ reactions can quickly change the picture.
Most years, major iOS updates offer the same basic feature set on new iPhones and old ones. But with iOS 27 things are different, and anyone with an iPhone 15 or older will miss out on a lot of new features. Here’s why iOS 27 makes a strong case for considering an iPhone upgrade.
iOS 27 technically supports all the same iPhone models as iOS 26 did. That means anyone with a model as old as 2019’s iPhone 11 can get the update.

But if your device doesn’t support Apple Intelligence, there’s not much new that’s worth getting excited about.
That’s because iOS 27 brings arguably two firsts for Apple. It’s the first iOS update where:
I’m not an Apple Intelligence hater. I’ll admit there were plenty of solid AI features before iOS 27. But there wasn’t much that was likely to motivate a new iPhone purchase.
It not only makes Siri good at the everyday tasks you might expect, but it’s also a privacy-friendly, powerful AI assistant that has already started changing the way I use my iPhone.

Beyond Siri, iOS 27 has other useful AI features like one-tap suggestions in Messages, natural language input in Calendar and Reminders, much-improved search in Mail, powerful editing tools in Photos, and a lot more.
If you add these improvements to all of the existing AI features iOS supports, like notification summaries, Apple Wallet’s AI order tracking, improved search in many system apps, and Live Translation across Messages, Phone, FaceTime, and AirPods—there’s a lot to be gained from having an AI-compatible iPhone.
Plenty of people are skeptical of AI, and perfectly content avoiding AI features as long as possible.
But if you can ignore the ‘AI’ label, Apple has built new features into iOS 27 that I suspect the average user will find worthwhile. They make the iPhone experience better, and offer a great reason to consider an upgrade.
